Top 5 Reasons to Travel to the Caribbean with Kids

Caribbean

A vacation in the Caribbean is the obvious choice for any traveler looking for a tropical getaway.  The beaches alone are enough to recommend the region, not to mention the favorable weather conditions and welcoming nature of each location.  More and more each year, Caribbean countries are making strides to enhance their location and invite families with young children to vacation with them.  From resorts with family-friendly amenities to attractions that entice the younger set, there are a number of reasons why the Caribbean is the perfect choice for your next family vacation.

1 – Affordability

Everything from airfare to lodgings can be found at a discounted rate in the Caribbean, especially if you make plans to visit in the off-season.  Families traveling with kids will most especially be able to take advantage of deals that are geared directly to them.

Many large resorts, especially those that advertise all-inclusive pricing, offer deals that allow children to stay absolutely free.  The most common special offer is one free child per adult, where for each adult that pays for their stay; a child stays, plays, and eats at no additional cost.  Many of these resorts even offer daily kid’s programs at no additional charge, so the kids can enjoy a day of fun with others their own age in a highly supervised facility, while the parents can head out and explore the country on their own.   Free room and board, plus child care?  You simply can’t beat that price.

2 – Beaches

The variety of available beaches throughout the Caribbean differs not only by country, but by region of each country.  Generally speaking, coastlines along the Atlantic Ocean have waters that are a little rougher, and provide great conditions for participating in watersports like surfing and kiteboarding.  On the other hand, the waters of the Caribbean Sea tend to be calmer and more accessible for younger children still learning to respect the sea.  The abundance of options means you’ll be able to find the perfect beach for you and your crew with no problem, which is why the beaches are one of the top reasons to visit the Caribbean with kids.

3 – Natural Attractions

The amount of energy children have is astounding, and a vacation packed filled with trips to museums and restaurant visits can be stifling (despite being culturally stimulating).  This is why the Caribbean is perfect for kids.  Natural attractions where kids can get out, play, explore, learn, and blow off steam abound in this region.  Each country offers something unique, from hiking trails through jungles and up mountains that end at waterfalls to underground caves that are both mysterious and awe-inspiring, and even garden tours where you can walk amongst gorgeous tropical greenery.  Check into the national park system for the country you intend to visit to find out if camping is an option, or if you can sign up for a tour of a protected wildlife habitat.

4 – Culture

A trip to the Caribbean is a great way to expose your children to foreign culture without traveling too far out of your comfort zone.  Not only is it close enough to the United States that your travel time will be shorter than making a trip over to another continent, but, many Caribbean nations are English speaking and accept U.S. currency.

Still, the cultural diversity in this region is astounding, with African, Spanish, British, and French heritages all represented in language, food, art, and in the country’s  day-to-day way of life.  You and your children will have no problem noticing culture differences (and similarities) simply by virtue of being in the Caribbean, but you can also add emphasis to them by visiting museums, outdoor markets, and local events and festivals.

5 – Food

It goes without saying that kids can be picky eaters, and traveling with kids who do not have very adventurous palates can be panic-inducing for some parents.  The great thing about the Caribbean is abundance of fresh fruits that are available on the menu.  Most kids adore fruits, so this allows them to find food that they can enjoy while sampling a locally harvested product that is parent-approved.  You likely won’t want your children to subsist on fruit alone throughout the duration of your trip, though, and that’s not a problem.  The Caribbean offers a bevy of dining options, from sandwich and pizza shops with familiar offerings to local joints that serve up regional delicacies.

A vacation in the Caribbean is everything a parent could ask for and a kid can dream of.  So what are you waiting for?  Start planning now, even if your proposed trip is months away.  It may seem like a lifetime, but really, it is just extra time you get to spend daydreaming about the sun, the sand, the surf, and quality time spent with your family.
