Stones [Calculi] form mainly in the kidneys and also get trapped in ureters leading to ureteric colic. stones do occur in Urinary bladder as well. The main ingredients of stone formation are mainly calcium oxalate followed by calcium phosphate and magnesium ammonium phosphate.
Kidney stone formation has many causes – harmonal, dietary, life style, occupation etc.
The symptoms throw out based on the size of the calculi. The calculi size may vary from that of sand grains to huge mass of few mm, leading to obstruction of urinary passage any where through out the tract.The bigger the size, the worst the symptoms would be.
Signs and symptoms of Renal stones :
Generally asymptomatic as long as the stone is smaller and with in the kidney. But when the stone is larger and trapped in the ureters, the patient will experience sudden excruciating pain [ref. as ureteric colic], sweating, vomiting and referred pain in the loins [flanks].
General management :
The patient should take complete bed rest when the pain starts and continues.
Hot fomentation or heat application is a must in the site of pain [just to relax the muscles and thus to reduce the pain intensity]
Plenty of fluids [preferably water] to be given and also the patient is advised to go regularly for more intake of water. This is mainly to prevent dehydration and minimize the urinary concentration].
Calcium rich food [butter, cheese, concentrated milk etc.] should be minimized or rather avoided for a while.
Surgery is indicated only when life threatening situation arises – severe pain, bloody urine, vomiting and dehydration occur.
